Feelings Ain’t Facts—But They Do Matter

Scripture: Proverbs 4:23 (NRSV): 'Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.'
Devotional Thought: We love to say 'I’m not emotional,' but that’s a lie and a liability. Suppressed emotions don’t disappear, they multiply. Solomon says, guard your heart, not lock it up like Fort Knox. That means paying attention to what’s going on inside. Feelings may not be the final authority, but they are data points. You don’t have to act on every emotion, but you do have to acknowledge it. Emotional intelligence starts by realizing your heart has a voice and wisdom means listening to it without letting it take the wheel.
Emotional Intelligence Focus: Self-Regulation
Self-Reflection Question: How do you usually respond when strong emotions rise up? What would it look like to pause instead of react?
Prayer: Lord, teach me to recognize my emotions without being ruled by them. Help me be honest about what I feel, and disciplined in how I respond. Grow the fruit of peace and self-control in me. In Christ’s name, Amen.
